A Cinderella Season: The Lady Vols Fight Back

Posted on 28 January 2011 by

Product Description
From DCTV:

Do you want to know what it takes to be a champion?

Winners of the 1996 NCAA Women’s Basketball Championship, the University of Tennessee’s, Lady Volunteers seemed poise to contend for the trophy again. But halfway through the 1997 season, the team could not seem to live up to their promise. They were losing almost every important game of the season. Injury to a star player, Kellie Jolly, didn’t help. It seemed that even the remarkable efforts of Chamique Holdsclaw would not keep the team from falling apart. Can this team really win again?

This program follows the Lady Vols, for an entire season. From the 6:00 am torture runs, inside the lockerroom, on the bench, during the games, the bus rides, the broken bones, the broken hearts — the viewer will feel like a member of the team as they turn tears into triumph at the 1997 NCAA Championship.

This film also captures the intensity and drive of Pat Summitt – the Tennessee coach – as she molds her team into overachievers and winners.

This film captures the real world of women’s sports – the sacrifices and the rewards – and the commitment that makes a champion.

About Nike
Nike watches are built to endure extreme outdoor conditions without missing a beat and they adhere to the company’s founding mission statement: to bring inspiration and innovation to every athlete in the world. And as Nike co-founder Bill Bowerman would add–if you have a body, you’re an athlete. Ever since the fateful day in 1971 when University of Oregon track coach Bowerman poured rubber into his wife’s waffle iron, technological innovation has been the spark that lights Nike’s fire. The Waffle outsole transformed the running world and soon after Nike Air evolved Nike’s revolutionary impact on sports. Beyond shoes–from watches and eyewear to carry gear and even socks–Nike is committed to giving athletes of every make, model and body style, who compete and recreate in ways never before imagined, the very best performance product. Here are just a few important dates in Nike’s journey:

  • American record-holder Steve Prefontaine becomes the first major track athlete to wear Nike brand shoes in 1973.
  • At the 1976 Olympic Trials, Nike shoes are seen in abundance for the first time–worn by young, rising stars in both middle- and long-distance events.
  • The first athlete to win an Olympic medal wearing Nike shoes is British runner, Steve Ovett in the 1980 Moscow Games
  • The Just Do It advertising campaign began in 1988, and is now ensconced in the Americana exhibit at the Smithsonian National Museum.

Lipstick & Dynamite – The First Ladies of Wrestling

Posted on 21 January 2011 by

Description
Lipstick & Dynamite shines a spotlight on the forgotten first ladies of the ring. Gladys ‘Killem’ Gillem wrestled women, men, alligators, and bears. At 18, Ida May Martinez took to the road to flash the only thing she knew – how to kick, punch, and defend herself. Narrowly escaping a date rape at 16, Penny Banner trained for survival. Still kicking butt at 80, The Fabulous Moolah and Johnnie Mae Young live together with midget wrestler sidekick Diamond ‘Lil, and continue to take bumps with World Wrestling Entertainment.

Each woman reflects on her own remarkable life with fond and bitter memories, reconciling a wild, flamboyant youth with the reality of getting older and fading away. Lipstick & Dynamite follows Moolah, Johnnie Mae and the girls 60 years, many bumps and falls later as they discuss the money, the old days and what it’s like to be a ‘lady’ in today’s favorite guilty pleasure: spectator sport.Amazon.com
If you recognize names like the Great Mae Young, Gladys “Killem” Gillem, and the Fabulous Moolah, then you long ago discovered the simple pleasure of watching women beat the heck out of each other. If not, then let Lipstick & Dynamite introduce you to some of the saltiest personalities ever to grace the wrestling ring, including the outspoken Ella Waldek, a former farmgirl turned roller derby jammer turned wrestling queen, who declares, “Whatever the referee didn’t see was legal.” This documentary mixes interviews, photos and film footage of actual bouts, and clips from shows like To Tell the Truth and cheesy movies like Racket Girls. There’s some social commentary about the changing roles of women and society, but the real engine of this movie are the girls themselves, holding forth on angels and heels, sleazy producers (like the legendary “promoter of flesh” Billy Wolfe), fixed matches, the loneliness of the road, and much, much more. “Being tough didn’t mean a damn thing,” comments Gillem, who went on to wrestle lions and alligators after leaving the ring behind. Maybe not, but these tough old ladies are delightful company. Featuring a great soundtrack with songs by Neko Case and others. –Bret Fetzer
